What is Home Energy Efficiency?
Home Energy Efficiency is about achieving the same (or a higher) level of comfort in a home, while using less energy and saving money on rising energy costs. But how do we know what a home's energy usage is, or where those unexpected cold drafts are coming from? Wouldn't it be nice to know these things before signing on the dotted line?
What Does an Energy Efficient Home Look Like?
Any home can be energy efficient (or not) regardless of when it was built. When it comes to energy efficiency, looks can be deceiving and both new and older homes often have room for energy-saving improvements.
Once the source of high energy costs, such as hidden air leaks, is identified — the fix becomes so much easier.
The Many Benefits of an Energy Efficient Home
- Value: Home efficiency upgrades add value to your home, increasing the resale value and extending the life of your home.
- Comfort: Canadians spend a lot of time in their homes. An energy efficient home reduces drafts and keeps you warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
- Lower energy bills: Living in an energy efficient building can result in a 30% decrease of your energy bills.
- Lower environmental impact: An efficient home uses less energy, meaning less Green House Gas being released into the environment.
The EnerGuide Rating System
The EnerGuide Rating System and home energy assessments are designed to help homeowners increase the energy-efficiency and comfort of their homes. It is also an initiative that helps consumers purchase the most energy-efficient equipment on the market. Natural Resources Canada also created the ENERGY STAR label to differentiate between the top 20% and the highest class of efficiency equipment. A list of available ENERGY STAR products is available on the NRCan website.
The EnerGuide rating demonstrates the performance of a home. Shown in gigajoules, the lower the rating, the less energy the house consumes.
The EnerGuide rating shows how your home's performance compares to a benchmark house. It breaks down the energy consumed by each source, and shows the home's Greenhouse Gas Emissions.
Registered Home Energy Evaluations
A Home Energy Evaluation, by a Registered Energy Advisor, provides an objective review of the energy use in a home and determines a rating based on a scientific assessment and the EnerGuide Rating System.
With a Home Energy Evaluation you gain the knowledge and information your client needs to make an accurate assessment of a home's energy performance.
