Community Awareness and Familiarity

When students walk to school, instead of being driven they are immediately engaged with their neighbourhood and community. The Walking School Bus initiative through ASRTS involves the entire school community in dealing with the issue of getting children safely to and from school. Volunteer parents who live near each other can start walking together, and when trust is built, walking schedules are organized. When parents and children start taking back the sidewalks of their communities by participating in programs like the Walking School Bus, social bonds are formed, networks are created, and community awareness increases.
