Solar FAQ's

What is the standard size of a residential photovoltaic solar system?

The typical size of a solar array is 5-10 kW. Windfall Ecology Centre's photovoltaic array is 2kW. A 2 kW solar array requires approximately 28 square meters (3.5m x 7.5m) of contiguous roof space.

How long will the solar array last?

The average life span of a solar system is 25-35 years.

How much does it cost to install a photovoltaic solar array?

The average cost for a 10kW array which is the largest under the microFIT program is $34,000

If I rent a home can I still get a solar system installed?

No, solar systems are available to property owners only. If you rent your home, encourage your landlord to invest in this renewable energy system.

What do I do if I decide to sell the house?

The FIT contract is transferable and you can transfer the contract to the new home owner. Otherwise you can also terminate the contract and take away the solar system to your new home.

Where does the solar array get installed?

Windfall will install the solar array on your roof. The most effective solar systems are on homes with a south facing roof with no shading from other buildings or trees. The solar array can also be "ground mounted" on a free standing solar tracking system.

Who will install the array?

Windfall's Professional Solar Installation Crew will come and install your array.

How long does the installation take?

Any solar array system that is smaller than 10kW will take 2-3 days to install.

Should I replace the shingles on my roof before I get the array installed?

If you need to replace your roof shingles soon, it would be a good idea to do so before the array is installed. If you have already installed your solar array and need to replace your roof shingles contact an installer to remove the solar panel mounts before you proceed in replacing your shingles.

Is my solar array covered under my home insurance?

If you buy a solar array and have it installed on your house, your household insurance is obligated to insure it, just as they insure the rest of your household items.

How much power will a residential solar system produce?

The amount of power produced depends on factors such as the size of the system, the location of the system, and the climate in your location.

Do the arrays generate power at night?

No, the photovoltaic array does not generate power at night, as the array gets it power from energy produced by direct sunlight.

Windfall Ecology Centre's photovoltaic solar arrays are grid-tied. What does this mean for me?

This means the power your array generates is linked to your local electricity distribution company and you will still be getting your power from this company, NOT directly from your grid. The difference now is your power company will pay you for the power your array generates.

How do I get paid?

You will receive payments from your local electricity distribution company. Your local distribution company makes these payments on behalf of the Ontario Power Authority.

What is the estimated rate of return?

The average Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GIC) rate of return is 3.35%, and the average Solar Feed in Tariff (FIT) rate of return is 5+%.

Do the systems Windfall provides meet the Ontario Domestic Content required?

Yes, and you will receive written confirmation.

How is my solar array income taxed?
