Commercial Building Energy Use Comparison

In 2018, the Ontario government launched a commercial building energy benchmarking program called 'Energy and Water Reporting and Benchmarking,' EWRB, to track water and energy use in large buildings. The regulation required commercial buildings of 50,000 sqft and above to report their energy and water consumption annually. This visualization captures the 2019 energy use performance for commercial buildings in York Region that reported their energy use. We chose six building types from the database for a provincial comparison. The charts provide a breakdown of the energy use in different building types in the York region compared to their provincial and national counterparts. The data reveals a not too impressive performance of York region buildings. It highlights the opportunity of increased efforts on the part of owners and tenants of commercial buildings in the region to attain efficiency in water and energy use.
